Susquehanna Fast Facts
ENROLLMENT: Approximately 2,000 men and women, from 30 states and 12 countries. About 8 percent are international or students of color. Eighty percent of our students live on campus. LOCATION: Selinsgrove, in the heart of Pennsylvania, 50 miles north of Harrisburg, 90 minutes from the Pocono ski areas, about a three-hour drive from Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., and New York City, and about a four-hour drive from Pittsburgh. ACADEMIC STRUCTURE: National, undergraduate liberal arts college with three schools: School of Arts, Humanities and Communications; School of Natural and Social Sciences; and Sigmund Weis School of Business. Degrees: Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Music. More than 50 majors and minors with a central curriculum focusing on the liberal arts and the development of skills in critical thinking and communications as well as a global perspective, and a cross-cultural experience for all students. AFFILIATIONS: Member of the Annapolis Group, an organization of the leading national independent liberal arts colleges. Accreditations including Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB International), National Association of Schools of Music (NASM) and the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. PREPROFESSIONAL PROGRAMS: Dentistry, law, medicine, ministry, teaching and veterinary medicine.
HONORS PROGRAM: Four-year interdisciplinary program for exceptional students. About 10 percent of the first-year class is offered admission. FACULTY: The student-faculty ratio is about 13 to 1. Average class size is 18. Susquehanna has a full-time faculty of 123; 92 percent have a doctorate or terminal degree in their fields. CAMPUS: Georgian architecture and hundreds of trees have created an attractive campus of 306 acres. More than 60 buildings, including two on the National Register of Historic Places, span a period of nearly 150 years, and performance and recital halls, art gallery, fitness center and a student recreation facility.A state-of-the-art science building is currently under construction. An attractive, technological advanced library with online access to thousands of journal articles; more than 330,000 books, DVDs and CDs; and comfortable spaces for group and quiet study. A comfortable walk to shops and services in downtown Selinsgrove. RESEARCH: Faculty-mentored research, performance and applied professional opportunities across all disciplines. TECHNOLOGY: Convenient WiFi hotspots facilitate wireless computing in a number of popular locations. Fully wired campus, with access to campus network and Internet from every residence hall room. Students have access to the Internet, e-mail accounts and space for personal Web pages with no extra technology fees. FOUNDED: 1858. Lutheran affiliation (ELCA). We welcome people of all religious backgrounds and those with no religious affiliation. Campus groups include Catholic Campus Ministry, Gospel Choir, Hillel, and InterVarsity Christian Fellowship.
CAREER SERVICES: A four-year program to develop professional goals and job-seeking skills. Includes a credit-bearing career planning course plus workshops, individual counseling, internships, on-campus interviews, and online and in-person networking with potential employers. POSTGRADUATE SUCCESS: Percentage of students graduating within four years: about 80 percent. Typically 96 percent of the graduating class is working full-time or enrolled in graduate school within six months. About 25 percent of students enter graduate or professional school, either immediately after Susquehanna or later. STUDENT LIFE: More than 100 student organizations, 23 Division III varsity sports and a nationally recognized program of community and service learning programs. More than 20,000 community service hours are contributed annually. About 20 percent of students join four national social sororities, four national social fraternities and two professional fraternities. Student-run radio station, newspaper and literary publications; student, faculty and professional choral, orchestral and theatrical performances; public lectures and performances featuring national and international artists and authorities; active campus ministrty programs serving many faiths. ATHLETICS: Twenty-three NCAA Division III intercollegiate sports; member of the Liberty League (football) and Landmark Conference. Active intramural and club sport programs; 26 acres of playing fields for baseball, field hockey, lacrosse, rugby, soccer and softball; a field turf surface for football. Garrett Fitness Complex houses a swimming pool, fitness center, basketball courts, indoor track and snack bar. Abundant outdoor recreation on the Susquehanna River, scenic roads and mountain trails. ADMISSION: Competitive; typically, 90 percent of our students rank in the top two-fifths of their high school classes. Honors Program candidates rank in the top 10 percent. Both SAT and ACT scores are considered. Our Write Option makes standardized test scores optional for students who submit graded writing samples. |
