Need Based Aid
Susquehanna University GrantsThe Susquehanna Grant Program is the largest single financial aid program administered by the University. Susquehanna awarded more than $4.0 million in grants to eligible students in 2007-2008. (As with all need-based financial aid, eligibility is determined from an analysis of the financial information applicants supply on their FAFSA and PROFILE applications.) Named Awards can provide additional grant assistance. Alumni and friends of the University provided more than $1 million in student awards in 2007-08. Many named awards are general, designed for needy and deserving students. Some, however, are set aside for special categories of students. These include scholarships for students majoring in specific disciplines such as accounting, business, pre-medicine and pre-theology. Others are for students from specific geographical areas, such as Northumberland or York counties, the Conyngham area of Luzerne County, and Philadelphia. Other awards are available to dependents of employees of Gettig Technologies Inc. in Spring Mills, PA. The Arthur Scholarship is for students from central PA. The March Scholarship is set aside for business majors from Perry County, PA. A complete list and further details on named awards is available in the University catalog endowments section. The Susquehanna financial aid staff screens all financial aid applications to determine eligibility for named awards which can become part of the total need-based financial aid package. There is no separate application for these awards. Federal GrantsThe Federal Pell Grant Program makes annual awards ranging from $400 to $4,310. You automatically apply for a Pell Grant when you complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). If your expected family contribution is $4,100 or less, you are probably eligible to receive aid from this program. Many students who do not qualify for Pell Grant funding, do qualify to receive aid from other sources. The Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (SEOG) is a federal grant program administered by Susquehanna. Grants range from $500 to $1,000 per year. State GrantsThe Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency (PHEAA) makes grants available to Pennsylvania residents in amounts up to $4,700 per year. You apply by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) before May 1. Remember to respond quickly to any requests for additional information. State Grant programs in Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Massachusetts, Ohio, Rhode Island, Vermont, Washington D.C., and West Virginia permit their grants to go to students attending Pennsylvania colleges and universities.
