Sexual Assault Student Support Program

The Sexual Assault Student Support Advocates are a group of Susquehanna University faculty and staff who are trained to provide assistance to university community members who have been targets of sexual violence.  Advocates provide information and support to those who have been targeted by unwanted sexual advances. Additionally, the role of the Advocate is to enhance the effectiveness and accessibility of existing support systems. Advocates can be contacted during business hours Monday through Friday.

Some examples of the role of Sexual Assault Student Support Advocates:

  • An Advocate may provide information to students about options for reporting a date rape.
  • An Advocate may be contacted by someone who has recently been assaulted and needs a neutral person to help them consider options.
  • An Advocate may accompany a student to the hospital following an assault.
  • An Advocate may refer students to counseling services or Student Health.
  • An Advocate might provide support to a student as his or her case works its way through the courts.
  • An Advocate might provide educational material through public speaking.

Advocates are faculty and staff at SU who are recruited and trained through the University Counseling Center .  They receive support and supervision by Counseling Center staff.  They are not mental health counselors, lawyers, health care providers or law enforcement officers.

Privacy:  Advocates respect the privacy of those who consult with them.  They do not reveal specific information without a student’s consent.  Advocates do make an anonymous report to the Coordinator of the program, Andy Dunlap, about each contact they have with students.  Only the minimum information necessary is communicated to the Coordinator.  At the end of each semester, an aggregate summary of all reports is made to the Susquehanna University Department of Public Safety by the Coordinator.
