Experience your education in programs within the School of Natural and Social Sciences. Known for their excellent teaching and outstanding hands-on opportunities, these programs support student education through engaging work both in and outside of the classroom. All of this is part of our preparation of liberal arts-based professionals through coursework, internships service learning and research possibilities.
Participate in student-faculty research, some of it funded by prestigious grants from organizations such as the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation and the National Council on Undergraduate research. Your project my lead to a presentation at a national professional meeting.
All of our programs support student research.
In laboratory sciences: Understand the worlds of wolf spiders, bats, owls, cornfields, and black cherry trees. Experiment with the developmental processes of fruit flies or sea urchins or heat-loving bacteria. Synthesize organic compounds and investigate photosynthesis or lasers or the chemistry of deep-sea heat vents. Look up toward the geology of planets or look in toward the smallest particles we can find. Measure water flow through the ground, map tree dispersion, find fossils, analyze weather patterns. Many biology, biochemistry and chemistry majors have graduated to exciting careers in medicine, health care, pharmaceutical industries and other related fields. Susquehanna physicists often enter aerospace and other engineering and technology areas. Our unique environmental sciences program provides a solid science background for our graduates who often find work in environmental protection and environmental policy areas.
In mathematics and computer science: Explore the mathematical worlds of quantum information theory, soap bubbles and space travel. Write software that helps a robot navigate its world or makes images on a screen more meaningful for physicians, pilots or other professionals. Our mathematics and computer sciences graduate who find challenging and rewarding professional openings through their coursework, internships and other learning experiences.
In social sciences: Investigate brain functioning, personality traits, developmental processes or social interaction. Analyze the roles of religion, race, globalization, ethnic identity and social institutions in human societies. Explore patterns of voting, international conflict and state politics. Counselors, therapists, policy makers, lawyers, researchers, government officials, political activists, and diplomats all emerge from the study of political science, psychology, sociology and anthropology.
All of these liberal arts majors and minors provide excellent preparation for almost any professional and business career. You also can explore our interdisciplinary programs in ecology, international studies, diversity studies, health care studies and legal studies.
