Three Crusaders Named Landmark Senior Scholar Athletes
SELINSGROVE, Pa.– Three Susquehanna University athletes are among the eight chosen as Landmark Senior Scholar Athletes for their respective spring sports.
The honorees are Luke Burtnett (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) for men's lacrosse, Danielle McCann (Berkeley Heights, N.J./Governor Livingston) for softball and Sarah Burkhardt (Hoffman Estates, Ill./Schaumburg) for women's outdoor track and field. Burtnett was a strong all-around contributor for the Susquehanna lacrosse program. He earned four letters for the Crusaders as a defender and made 39 starts in 54 games played over his career. He contributed 68 ground balls as a defender during his career, including a career-high 24 ground balls as a senior. He also posted one assist offensively which came in his freshman year. Burtnett graduated magna cum laude from Susquehanna with a degree in broadcasting. He was a member of conference academic honor rolls multiple times over his four-year career, and also worked as a disc jockey for WQSU during his four years.
McCann was a four-year participant on the softball team at Susquehanna while also excelling in the classroom. She made 57 starts and appeared in 75 games over four seasons, and produced career highs in every offensive category as a senior by knocking out 21 hits to go along with 10 runs, three doubles and 10 RBI. She also served as a co-captain for the Crusaders and helped the team earn one conference postseason berth during her career. McCann graduated cum laude with a degree in accounting and finance with a minor in Spanish. She was twice selected for conference academic honor rolls and was a member of the Economics Honor Society, the Accounting Club and the Investment Club at Susquehanna.
Burkhardt excelled on and off the track for Susquehanna, helping the team finish as the runner-up in both the Landmark Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field Championships. She was a second-team All-Conference performer both indoor and outdoor as she placed second in the high jump as a senior, and she was a conference champion in the high jump as a freshman. She added three other top-five finishes at Landmark Championships as a senior. Burkhardt graduated magna cum laude with University Honors with a degree in communications and sociology at Susquehanna. She was a member of the senior class council and the chapel council and was also a staff writer for the The Crusader student newspaper.
A committee of Landmark Conference officers, athletics directors and sports information directors selected the recipients, choosing one senior from each of the spring sports sponsored by the conference. The honorees must have a cumulative GPA of 3.2 and are selected based on their accomplishments in all areas of college life including athletics, academics and other extracurricular activities.
The Landmark Conference honored Senior Scholar Athletes in each of the 20 varsity sports sponsored by the conference over the course of the 2007-08 academic year. Burtnett, McCann and Burkhardt bring the total of Crusader honorees for the year to six, the most of any Landmark school.
