Andrew Steele '11 knew early in life that he wanted to pursue a career in medicine. So he was extremely selective when choosing the undergraduate university that would prepare him for medical school.

"After visiting Susquehanna, seeing the Web site and meeting the professors — that's what really prompted me to apply and ultimately enroll here," he says. Steele, a biochemistry major with a minor in health care studies, says a high school trip to a medical seminar convinced him that he was meant to be a surgeon.

"Surgery seems like a career where I can really make a difference," he says. "You see immediate results."

As an Eagle Scout, he understands the importance of leadership, and he looks forward to leading surgical teams. "Leadership is something I've really been able to explore here at Susquehanna," he adds.

He serves as treasurer of the Student Government Association and the Pre–Health Professions Club, secretary of the Chemical Society and vice president for finance of Phi Mu Delta fraternity. He is also involved with the College Republicans, sits on the Student Conduct Board and rows with the crew team.

"It's fantastic that the river is so close," Steele says. "The natural environment is something students really enjoy here."

Steele also appreciates living in a small, close-knit community. "It's like a family here," he says, explaining that even President L. Jay Lemons is approachable. "You always see him around talking to students. He really wants to know what the students are thinking."

After carefully weighing his options, Steele says he is confident he made the right choice. "Susquehanna has really lived up to everything I thought it should be," he says.
